Canditral 200 mg is used to treat a broad range of fungal infections affecting the skin, nails, mouth and internal organs. It is specifically beneficial for infections that can’t be treated by over-the-counter creams or ointments. The active ingredient present in the medication is Itraconazole. Itraconazole is a potent antifungal agent that belongs to the class of triazole.

MECHANISM OF ACTION 

Itraconazole inhibits the cytochrome P450 dependent enzymes that are responsible for ergosterol synthesis. Ergosterol is a crucial component of a cell membrane. Itraconazole interacts with 14-alpha-demethylase, a cytochrome P450 dependent enzyme which is necessary to convert Lanosterol to Ergosterol. Therefore, its inhibition results in increased cellular permeability causing leakage of cellular components. This eventually results in bacterial cell death. 

USES

Canditral 200 mg is used to treat serious fungal and yeast infections. It is also used for systemic conditions like Aspergillosis, Blastomycosis, Histoplasmosis as well as localized infections like nail and mouth infections. 

DOSAGE

Canditral 200 mg dosage varies depending on the infection type to be created and the form of medication used. For systemic or severe infections, adult doses range from 200 mg to 400 mg. For nail fungus, common regimens include 200 mg once daily for 12 weeks or as directed by the healthcare provider.

• Anticoagulants: Itraconazole can decrease the effect of certain anticoagulants which can increase the risk of bleeding. 
• Seizure and antibiotic drugs: Seizure medications speed up the itraconazole breakdown and lead to treatment failure. 
• Ergot alkaloids: Ergot alkaloids like ergotamine and dihydroergotamine should not be combined with Itraconazole as it can lead to reduced blood flow. 

PRECAUTIONS & WARNINGS 

• If allergic to itraconazole or any other ingredient of the medication do not use the medication. 
• Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets. 
• There are reports of Itraconazole causing neuropathy and thus it should be used with precaution. 
• There is risk associated with combined use of Itraconazole and Quinidine. 
• Inform your physician about the medications that have been already prescribed to you. 
• Do not use this medication if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breast feeding. 
• Make sure you administer acid-neutralizing medicines at least 1 hour prior or 2 hours after your itraconazole dose.
